Welcome to Lancaster Yarn Shop's Class & Workshop Blog!

Lancaster Yarn Shop offers a variety of classes and FREE workshops for fiber artists of all skill levels, from Absolute Beginner to Extremely Accomplished. The emphasis is on celebrating the tradition of knitting and handwork (and learning cool new stuff!) in a fun and friendly atmosphere.

Classes and Free Workshops are held at the Yarn Shop in our beautiful upstairs studio at 3519 Old Philadelphia Pike in Intercourse, Lancaster County, PA. (HERE for directions). There is plenty of free parking, and we are just steps from the terrific restaurants and great shopping at Kitchen Kettle Village. Classes are taught by our experienced and knowledgeable instructors and classified by skill level.

Tuesday, November 1, 2011: Absolute Beginner's Knitting Workshop



Announcing our next Free Knitting Workshop! Join us on Tuesday, November 1st for an Absolute Beginning Knitting Workshop!  A friendly introduction to the absolute basics of knitting. Learn everything you need to make a simple, beautiful scarf.  This scarf is made using only the knit stitch! 
Project:  Garter Stitch Scarf

Time:  9:30 AM - 11:30 AM
Skill Level: Absolute Beginner.
Skills Required: None!
Techniques Taught: Material selection, long-tail cast on, the knit stitch & how to bind off.
Materials:  Worsted weight wool yarn, US #8 needles.

This workshop is suitable for Absolute Beginner Knitters. Absolute Beginners are Future Knitters who have not yet put ‘yarn’ to ‘needle,’ have neither ‘knit’ nor ‘purled,’ and don’t know the difference between ‘casting on’ and ‘casting off.’   Also, perhaps, Former Knitters who may have forgotten it all (you know who you are!).  We’ll help you choose your materials and tools, and teach you to cast on, knit, purl, and cast off.

Tuesday, November 8, 2011: Clara Cowl Free Workshop

Announcing our next Free Knitting Workshop! Join us on Tuesday, November 8th for an Intermediate/Extreme Level Knitting Workshop!  A friendly introduction to giant cables & grafting!   Simple modifications make this cowl a reversible scarf or a double cowl.  The cowl is completely reversible, completely seamless, and completely luxurious. It’s worked completely in 1 x 1 rib and is grafted together at the end.

Tuesday, October 18th: Purple Zephyr--A New Sock from LYS!


Announcing our next Free Knitting Workshop! Join us on Tuesday, October 18th for an Intermediate Knitting Workshop!  A new sock pattern making it's Debut at LYS!  A playful rib pattern keeps knitters interested while giving a nod to the unique role of the railroad in Lancaster County.


Project: Purple Zephyr Socks
Date:  Tuesday, October18
Time:  9:30 AM - 11:30 AM

Skill Level: Intermediate/Advanced.
Skills Required: Basic Knitting skills necessary.  Must know how to cast on & knit on double pointed needles, and have a basic understanding of sock knitting..
Techniques Taught: Stretchy cast on, discussion of the 'garter short-row heel,' and other tricks & tips for successful sock knitting.

Materials:  Approximately 100 grams fingering/sock weight yarn, 1 set US#1 or 2 dpn needles,  (Needle size may need to be adjusted according to gauge.)

This project is suitable for Intermediate & Advanced Knitters.
